It's been awhile since Miss Daisy and Miss Helen brought the bookmobile to town, so let's stop by and see what was on the New York Times Bestseller list during this week in 1977. Let's start with fiction! All aboard!
And now, we'll head to the back of the bookmobile to check out the non-fiction bestsellers. If you're too short to reach the top shelf, don't worry. Miss Helen has a step stool.
A dynasty is forming in Kansas City. Unfortunately, the team owner missed the celebration.
The Royals took their second consecutive World Series crown last night, with a convincing 4-0 home victory over the Padres. Larry Gura came close to a complete game shutout before giving way to Mark Littell with two out in the ninth. Royals players celebrated in style, as evidenced in the photograph above.
The excitement might have been too much for Royals owner Jeff Koster. Kloster, listening to the game from home, decided to make a dash for the airport with his team leading after four innings. The Kloster corporate jet was warmed up and ready to make the flight to Kansas City, but the owner was nowhere to be found. It was discovered later that Kloster was detained at a local convenience store after being accused of stealing a pack of Chiclets. Kloster was taken to Macomb County police headquarters and booked, before it was determined that he had actually entered the store with the Chiclets already in his possession. By the time Kloster was released, the game had concluded.
Congratulations to the Royals and Padres. Now, on to 1977!
This pic is too awesome not to use again!
In the end, it wasn't even close, as Jeff "Yountfan" Kloster ran away with Manager of the Year honors for 1976. His Royals won their division by eight games and narrowly missed the century mark in wins.
Jeff also won Manager of the Year in 1963.
Two points were given for a first-place vote, one for a second-place vote. First-place votes are in parentheses. Here's the final tally:
Jeff Kloster, Royals (10) 21
Dean Collins, Orioles 6
Bill Mattis, Phillies (1) 4
Scott Philipp, Padres 3
Carl Alexis, Brewers (1) 2
That's Jeff "Yountfan" Kloster enjoying a victory stogie after his team swept the Pirates to take the 1975 crown. The two teams battled all season, as they were both in the Central, but when crunch time came, the Royals dominated.
Congratulations Jeff! Now, on to the bicentennial year!
